Dances we teach: Cha Cha

Cha cha is the name of a Latin American dance of Cuban origin. It is danced to the music of the same name introduced by Cuban composer and violinist Enrique Jorrín in 1953. The rhythm was developed from the danzón by a syncopation of the fourth beat. The name is onomatopoeic, derived from the rhythm of the güiro (scraper) and the shuffling of the dancers’ feet.

Cha cha is one of the five dances of the “Latin American” program of international ballroom competitions.

The basis of the modern dance was laid down in the 1950s by Pierre & Lavelle and developed in the 1960s by Walter Laird and other top competitors of the time. The basic steps taught to learners today are based on these accounts.

Steps are kept compact and the dance is danced generally without any rise and fall. The modern ballroom technique of Cha cha does undergo gradual evolution, particularly in competition dancing, but in essence is still firmly based on its Cuban origin in the 1950s.

Getting Started With Rumba Dance Ballroom Lessons

If you want to learn Rumba dancing, it's an extremely popular styling of ballroom dancing & it's also one of the most easy to understand. The rumba is a dance for couples, which means that you'll need someone to dance with! However, basic ballroom lessons for the rumba can be understood either individually or in partnership. This means that you can actually learn and practice by yourself, but only to a limited extent. It is, in the end, a true partner dance. Choose the man or woman of your choice and get ready to Rumba. You will also want a good pair of dancing shoes as well.

The basic Rumba dance steps are fairly easy to learn. As taught in ballroom lessons, you need to face your partner first. Then your hands must be placed: one on the waist and the other extended from the chest. The beat will guide you in the Rumba. When the beat begins, you will begin to dance, left foot first if you are the leader. You step with your left foot twice to your left. Your right foot should follow. Again, you will step with the left and this time you will move forward.

Continuing with these ballroom lessons for the rumba... starting with the right foot, you go forward twice and then right twice all at once. This step should be fluid and seamless. Now you want both your right and left feet to meet each other. Step backwards with the right twice and meet both feet together again. Now all you have to do is repeat. That is all there is to it, you have just learn the Rumba.

One thing you really want to remember with Rumba dance steps is that the music is very fast, usually with a beat of 4/4 or 2/4; you want to keep moving with the music. Even if you make a mistake, do not stop, keep going, and let the music guide you. This is one thing you'll learn throughout any series of ballroom lessons. It's crucial. Fluidity is essential to the dance and you don't want to waste time or interrupt the partnership by dwelling on mistakes. Don't look back! There are other moves and steps that could be added to the Rumba dance steps to add some real Latin flare, but it is more essential to get the basic steps down and add to them as you go. Having a good series of ballroom lessons is key... You'll want to find a local venue, ballroom, or studio in which to learn the rumba.

Once you've found a class and are in the swing of things, take your ballroom dance instruction home. Practice makes perfect in most areas of life and Rumba dance steps are no different. Just keep practicing with your partner or even by yourself and in no time you will have the Rumba down pat. We hope you enjoyed these simple ballroom lessons for the rumba!
